아울러 주요 관심연구 분야를 알 수 있도록 Dr.Boyd 의 소개글을 전재합니다.

Since first entering academics, my primary research interest has been focused on quantifying damage to periodontal tissues that may occur during orthodontic treatment. As a logical extension of this effort, I have also been engaged in several clinical trials during the last eight years of various treatments which have the goal of prevention of damage to periodontal tissues during orthodontic treatment. My initial clinical training as a periodontist and orthodontist has provided the skills and interest to pursue these relationships. I have also received continuous extramural support for these clinical investigations since 1983. These investigations have determined the efficacy of several antimicrobial preparations such as stannous fluoride gels, peroxide rinses and enzyme containing toothpastes and various mechanical methods of plaque removal such as conventional tooth brushing, floss interproximal brushes, oral irrigation and new designs of electric toothbrushes. I was also the principal investigator of a four year clinical study on the effects of orthodontic treatment on the periodontal status of adults with normal periodontal tissues as compared to adults with treated (reduced but healthy)periodontal tissues and adolescents. This effort culminated in having the first published, prospective, longitudinal clinical study of periodontal status in adults receiving orthodontic treatment (American Journal of Orthodontics, 1989).

A secondary area of research interest has been the study of forces generated by the mandible in the temporomandibular fossa using a monkey model. This effort was undertaken in conjunction with cohorts at the University of Florida.

I was also involved from 1988 until 1993 as a co-investigator in a 5-year N.I.H. funded study designed to determine the outcomes of orthodontic treatment. It that study, I had the primary responsibility of determining the effects of orthodontic treatment on alveolar bone height and root length in adults and adolescents who have had full-fixed appliance extraction or non-extraction orthodontic treatment in the permanent dentition.

Recently, our Department of Orthodontics with Dr. Donald Poulton as primary investigator, was funded by the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation for a study of the outcomes of orthodontic treatment under differing delivery systems. I participate with Drs. Sheldon Baumrind and Vicki Vlaskalic of our department as a co-investigator in that study.

Another recent major research effort at the University of the Pacific has been as principal investigator for a longitudinal study of the new Invisalign Appliance. Our research showed that this clear, removable appliance was a useful tool for orthodontic treatment for many different types of malocclusions that occur in the permanent dentition.
